Christoph Kern faz criação de cubos com uma obsessão quase científica usando para isso um conhecimento profundo da materialidade da pintura. Nas suas investigações Christoph Kern segue diferentes percursos:
-Cubos a implodir no espaço, girando em torno da ficção científica, com estruturas que invocam conotações como Star Wars ou o 2001 Odisseia no Espaço de Kubrick.
-Ou cubos monolíticos que nos parecem eliminar o espaço pictórico em absoluto na sua tentativa de tentar chegar ao exagero das arestas.
-Finalmente, mas não menos importante, um foco em paisagens futurísticas que parecem ter sido geradas pelos próprios cubos, e onde no entanto estes mesmos cubos tendem mais para a sua dissolução.
As pinturas de Kern são uma história acumulada do próprio processo que lhes dá origem. São trabalhados em múltiplas camadas. Começam com o cenário inicial que está a ser investigado, estabelecendo o essencial do que está a ser pintado. Com cada camada progressiva a evolução dos cubos, o seu crescimentos, cor, posição e movimentos no espaço, assim como as relações entre eles são seguidas, as posições a que chegam são testadas e levadas até ao ponto em que a imagem pode descansar. Este estado é documentado antes do processo da pintura continuar. Pentimenti[1] e filmes animados mostram os diferentes estados de transformação de cada quadro e são uma forma de o observador poder perceber a evolução de cada pintura.
O que torna as telas de Kern poderosas é o facto de quando acabados eles gerarem significados através da evocação de situações específicas e retratando mundos muitos particulares que parecem extremamente convincentes, algumas vezes até familiares, apesar de terem origem no puramente formal e abstracto.
[1] Pentimenti (definição wikipédia): processo artístico no qual uma alteração é executada numa pintura enquanto sua feitura está em andamento. Esse procedimento é evidenciado por traços do estado anterior do trabalho, que podem mostrar escolhas e ideias descartadas pelo criador quando, por exemplo, este toma a decisão de modificar uma composição. O termo é italiano e significa “arrependimento” em sentido literal, vindo do verbo pentirsi.

Christoph Kern uses old master knowledge of the material of painting with almost scientific obsessiveness to ‚breed cubes’. In his investigations Christoph Kern follows different tracks:
-cubes imploding in space, gyrating in science – fiction – like structures that evoke connotations like Star Wars or Kubrick’s 2001.
-Or monolithic cubes that seem to all but eliminate pictorial space in their attempt to push towards and overflow the edges. And, last but not least, a focus on futuristic landscapes that appear to have been generated by the cubes themselves, yet in which the cubes tend more towards dissolution.
-Kern’s paintings are an accumulated history of their own making. The paintings are worked up in many layers, beginning with the initial scenario under investigation, setting the scene.
With each progressive layer the cubes’ evolution, their growth, color, position and movement in space as well as their relationship towards each other is traced, the positions at which they arrive are tested and pushed towards a point at which the image can rest. This stage is documented before the painting process continues. Pentimenti[1] and animated films show the different stages of one painting’s transformation and are a way for the viewer to share in the painting’s evolution.
What makes Kern’s paintings powerful is that in the end the paintings generate meaning by evoking specific situations and depicting very particular worlds that seem utterly convincing, sometimes even familiar, even though they originate in the purely formal and abstract.
[1] Pentimenti (wikipedia’s definition): is an alteration in a painting, evidenced by traces of previous work, showing that the artist has changed his or her mind as to the composition during the process of painting. The word is Italian for repentance, from the verb pentirsi, meaning to repent.
